The ancient Irish megalithic tombs may have served as communal gathering places rather than solely royal burial sites.

In 2020, researchers identified genetic connections among individuals in various ancient tombs across Ireland. The evidence of incest linked to a man interred in a grand tomb suggests he belonged to a genetic elite, reminiscent of the Egyptian pharaohs.
