On Friday, former President Trump expressed his backing for Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA) should he decide to run for governor of Pennsylvania.
During a rally in Pittsburgh, Trump mentioned he had heard “rumors” about Meuser contemplating a gubernatorial run.
“If that’s your choice, you have my full support,” Trump stated.
“He has been an excellent lawmaker,” Trump continued. “If you decide to run, you have my endorsement. And you will win. People will understand that very quickly.”
Meuser indicated to The Hill back in January that he was seriously contemplating challenging Shapiro in the 2026 election.
“I’m considering it,” Meuser told The Hill. “If I believe I can enter the race and win, that means defeating the current administration, specifically Josh Shapiro.”
Meuser has been serving Pennsylvania’s 9th Congressional District since 2019 and previously held the position of state revenue chief from 2011 to 2015.
In the 2022 election, Shapiro triumphed over Republican candidate Sen. Doug Mastriano. Mastriano was regarded as a weak contender in the general election, but Shapiro continues to enjoy significant popularity in the state while also cultivating a national profile. He is viewed as a potential candidate for the presidency in 2028.
