Washington (AP) – The President of the United States, Donald Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping had a discussion on Thursday amid uncertainty in global trade as tariff negotiations between their nations hit a standstill.
This conversation was covered by Xinhua, a state-run news agency in China, while the White House has yet to provide a comment.
Just a day prior, Trump had expressed that reaching an agreement with Xi would be challenging.
“I have a great respect for President Xi of China, and I always strive for a deal, but he is very tough and negotiating with him is quite difficult!!!” Trump stated on his social media platform.
Trade talks between the US and China stalled shortly after a May 12 agreement aimed at reducing tariff rates. The impasse is fueled by ongoing competition for economic dominance.
