NEW YORK (AP) — The Trump administration is overseeing a $7 billion renovation project for New York City’s bustling yet outdated Penn Station, with the Transportation Director indicating they are taking a backseat in the city’s public transit efforts.
For years, local and state officials have pushed for a transformation of the nation’s busiest rail hub, which is hindered by issues ranging from outdated equipment to cramped commuter pathways.
Transport Secretary Sean Duffy stated that his agency aims to create a world-class Penn Station by collaborating with Amtrak, the federal charter railroad company that operates the Midtown Manhattan hub. Duffy mentioned that the Metropolitan Transportation Agency has been removed from a leadership role in the renovation project.
“New York City deserves a safe and clean Penn Station that reflects America’s greatness. The history of MTA’s inefficiency, waste, and mismanagement necessitated a fresh approach,” Duffy said in a prepared statement.
The administration has not yet provided information on the reconstruction timeline or progression.
Governor Kathy Hochul described the decision as “a significant victory for New Yorkers,” emphasizing that it will alleviate tax burdens. Hochul mentioned that she had sought federal funding from Trump.
“I’d like to extend my gratitude to President Duffy and his secretary for taking on the responsibility of delivering the beautiful new $7 billion station that New Yorkers deserve,” Hochul stated in a prepared statement.
Authority Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber expressed his satisfaction with the federal government’s focus on the project and hopes that the MTA will remain a key partner as the department’s primary tenant.
Duffy has recently addressed transportation issues, including crimes on the city subway and $9 tolls that contribute to the congestion of Manhattan’s traffic. Federal authorities have set a Sunday deadline to resolve the toll situation.
