A UK company has secured permission to mass-produce electric vehicle (EV) batteries with ultra-high power density that can be fully charged in just 18 seconds.

On June 2nd, RML Group was recognized as compliant with the production certification for Varevolt batteries, allowing the company to manufacture robust batteries for EV manufacturers.

James Arkell, powertrain director at RML Group, made a statement regarding the achievement.

RML batteries deliver substantial power outputs within short durations. The Varevolt batteries are capable of supplying 6 kilowatts per kilogram and can “release all that power very rapidly.” Michael Mallock stated this to Auto Car. The battery boasts a C rating of 200, meaning it can be fully charged or discharged in roughly 18 seconds.

For context, fully electric Porsche Taycan batteries have a C rating of around 4-5, requiring approximately 12-15 minutes for charging or discharging.

The modular design of Varevolt batteries allows manufacturers to customize them for various applications. “You can emphasize range, prioritize power, or find a balance between the two,” he remarked to Autocar, based on the vehicle type.

Ultra-fast Charging for Ultra-fast EVs

Some smaller manufacturers are already implementing Varevolt batteries. This aids in advancing innovative vehicles like the Czinger 21c Hybrid Hypercar, which utilizes a combination of electric motors powered by battery energy and internal combustion engines running on gasoline.

Currently, RML Group is producing several bare bolt batteries simultaneously, but the anticipated high power output isn’t limited to exclusive products like the 21C (Czinger previously manufactured 80 luxury sports cars in its initial run).

According to Mallock, the company is also developing battery kits.

“For these types of vehicles, you can implement replacement packs that significantly increase the range. If the remaining components of the car allow it, an eight-fold output enhancement is achievable,” Mallock shared with AutoCar.
