Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) was taken to a hospital in the Washington area on Wednesday after feeling lightheaded while at the Senate gym in the morning.
As per a spokesman for the Democratic leader, Schumer received treatment for dehydration and has since returned to the Capitol to continue his work.
“This morning, Senator Schumer was at the Senate gym and experienced lightheadedness,” the spokesman stated. “Out of an abundance of caution, he went to the hospital, received treatment for dehydration, and is now back at work in the Capitol.”
“He would like to remind everyone to stay hydrated and avoid overheating,” the spokesman added.
The nation’s capital is currently experiencing a significant heat wave this week, with temperatures nearing record highs and no relief expected until Friday.
This week is particularly crucial at the Capitol as Democrats are engaged in discussions with Republican leaders to address key issues within a large tax package.
Schumer’s incident marks the first health-related event for the Senator this year, following Senator Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) recent falls and health concerns during his last appearances at GOP meetings.
