Kiev, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian forces launched attacks on Russian ballistic missiles and drones early Friday, resulting in at least three injuries, according to officials.
Numerous explosions resonated throughout the capital. In Kiev, debris scattered over various districts as the air defense system worked to intercept incoming threats, said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kiev city administration.
Local officials reported three individuals sustained injuries and urged residents to seek shelter.
“Our air defense units are doing everything possible, but we must ensure we protect one another,” he added.
Authorities noted damage across several areas, with rescue teams responding in multiple locations.
A fire ignited on the 11th floor of a 16-story residential building in the Solomiyansky district. Emergency services evacuated three residents from the affected apartment, and rescue operations are ongoing. Another fire also occurred in a metal warehouse.
Tkachenko mentioned that the metro track linking two Kyiv stations was damaged during the attack; however, there were no fires or injuries reported.
Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, head of the region’s military administration, indicated that an explosion occurred near apartment buildings in the northern region of Chernichv, causing windows and doors to shatter. He also reported explosions from ballistic missiles on the outskirts of the city.
The overnight assault happened shortly after President Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine and Russia should “fight for a while” before being separated and pursuing peace.
Trump made these comments during a meeting with the new German Prime Minister, Friedrich Merz, whom he referred to as the “lockman of the world” capable of halting the bloodshed by exerting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
