BEIJING (AP) — Last month, two Japanese men were killed in the Chinese port city of Daryan following a dispute with their Chinese business associates, according to police reports released Tuesday.
The primary suspect, a 42-year-old man named Yuan, was taken into custody on May 24, one day after the incident was reported to the local police.
Yuan has been a long-term resident of Japan, while the victims were Japanese nationals visiting China, as indicated in statements from Chinese authorities.
The police did not disclose the nature of the disagreement or the manner in which the victims were killed.
Last year, a Stinging Attack raised concerns among Japanese schoolchildren about safety during their travels and stay in China. In a tragic incident, a 10-year-old boy lost his life, and another incident involved a Chinese attendant on a school bus who died after an assailant attempted to prevent him from boarding.
Daryan, formerly known as Port Arthur to Westerners, was a Russian naval base photographed by Japan during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05.
