Cambridge, Massachusetts (AP) — Boston traffic authorities are currently investigating a shooting that occurred on Harvard University’s subway platform on Sunday, prompting the school to advise students and staff to take shelter.
Officials temporarily redirected subway passengers in certain areas of the city and suspended bus services while officers from multiple departments searched for the suspect.
According to an initial investigation, Richard Sullivan, Chief of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority’s Transit Police, stated in an email that a gunman fired four to five rounds at a “targeted individual” on the southbound platform at Harvard Square. The assailant then fled the scene.
There is currently no evidence to suggest that the targeted individual or anyone else sustained injuries, he noted.
Authorities were alerted to gunfire around 2:15 PM, and following this, a message was sent to the Harvard community advising them to stay alert for further updates and to be aware of their surroundings in the vicinity of the busy station near the main campus of the Cambridge school.
Messages that had been posted on the Harvard University website were removed late Sunday afternoon.
