Pistachio Cream Salmonella: CDC Connects Imported Spreads to Four Illness Outbreaks

Federal health officials reported on Monday that four individuals in two states have fallen ill due to salmonella infections associated with pistachio cream, a nut butter spread used in various desserts and dishes.

Three residents from Minnesota and one individual from New Jersey became ill between March 10 and May 19. The outbreak has been linked to Emek-branded pistachio cream, which has a usage date of October 19.

The affected spreads may be packaged in an 11-pound (5-kilogram) tub, imported from Turkey, and sold online to wholesalers, restaurants, and food service providers across the country. The production code is 241019. The CDC advises that these products should not be sold, distributed, or offered.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning can manifest within hours or days after consuming contaminated food and may include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. While most individuals recover within a week, some cases require hospitalization. Young children, elderly individuals over 65, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
