Phoenix (AP) – Josh Naylor capped off the game with a grand slam in the 11th inning, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 8-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night. Justin Martinez struggled as the closer, surrendering a four-run lead with two outs in the ninth.
Corbin Carroll kicked off the scoring with a leadoff homer, while Naylor contributed three hits and five RBIs for the Diamondbacks.
Martinez started the ninth with the Diamondbacks up 4-0, facing Jorge Polanco and Randy Arozarena. After walking Dylan Moore on a full count, he signaled for an athletic trainer following a pitch thrown to Donovan Solano.
The Diamondbacks later revealed that Martinez had been pulled from the game due to elbow compression.
Once Jeff Brigham took over for Martinez, he allowed an RBI single to Solano and Cole Young, before Dominic Canzone leveled the score with a 450-foot, two-run homer to right field for his first major league home run of the season.
Canzone, who was acquired from Arizona at the 2023 trade deadline, was called up from Triple-A Tacoma earlier that day and stepped in as a pinch hitter in the seventh.
Juan Morillo managed to retire slugger Cal Raleigh with two runners on base, concluding the inning. Morilo then pitched a flawless 10th, while Jalen Beeks (2-0) closed out the 11th with three consecutive outs.
Naylor caught hold of a 1-2 pitch from Carlos Vargas (1-5), sending a home run soaring to center-right. Vargas subsequently loaded the bases with an intentional walk to Ketel Marte, followed by a walk to Gerald Perdomo.
Seattle native Carroll connected for his 19th home run off the first pitch from Mariners starter Emerson Hancock.
Meryl Kelly delivered six shutout innings for the Diamondbacks.
