Paris (AP) – No.1 Aryna Sabalenka is set to face No.2 Coco Gauff in the French Open final on Saturday, as both women aim to secure their first title.
Gauff, who was a finalist at the French Open in 2022 at just 18 years old, has since reached the US Open 2023 finals, which remains her only major triumph so far.
Sabalenka, 27, hailing from Belarus, has clinched three major titles but is making her debut in the French Open finals.
This matchup marks the first time the top two players have met in Paris since 2013, when Serena Williams overcame Maria Sharapova, making it one of only two occurrences in the last 30 years.
Both Sabalenka and Gauff have split their previous 10 encounters evenly, although Sabalenka emerged victorious in their most recent clash on the clay courts at the Madrid Open just a month ago. ___
