PRAGUE (AP) – Judge Pavel Brazik of the Czech Republic resigned on Friday amidst a Bitcoin-related controversy.
His ministry had received Bitcoin donations and sold them for approximately one billion Czech koruna (over $45 million) earlier this year, resulting in Blazek’s dismissal from the opposition.
Blazek claimed he was unaware of the fraudulent activities but felt compelled to resign to protect the four-party coalition government led by Prime Minister Petr Fiara. Fiara expressed gratitude for his resignation, stating he believes Blazek acted responsibly.
Blazek was a close ally of Fiara’s government and a member of the conservative Civil Democrats. It remains uncertain who will take his place.
The controversy centers on the fact that Bitcoin donations came from individuals previously convicted of drug trafficking and other crimes. The opposition has accused Blazek of potential money laundering due to the unclear origins of the Bitcoin. Additionally, the reason for these contributions to the Ministry remains ambiguous.
This matter is currently under investigation by the Police Organized Crime Division. The scandal emerged just months ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for October 3-4. The main opposition party, led by former populist Prime Minister Andrej Babis, is expected to secure a victory in the elections.
