SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – A surge of commuters from the San Francisco Gulf region sought out alternative routes after the local commuter rail system experienced a shutdown for several hours on Friday morning.
Bay Area Rapid Transit reported an inability to operate the train control system due to a malfunction. A BART spokesperson noted that the media phone line was unable to supply power to the train control system, rendering safe train operation impossible. The exact cause was not immediately disclosed.
BART typically serves nearly 175,000 passengers on weekdays. The system went offline shortly after 5 a.m. and did not fully resume operations until around 9 a.m., complicating morning travel for many. Additionally, BART services include routes to San Francisco International Airport. Alternate ferry and bus services increased their operations to assist passengers in reaching their destinations.
