Representative Nanette Diaz Barragan (D-Calif) expressed concerns on Sunday that the deployment of the National Guard in the Los Angeles area could “escalate the situation.”
“That’s a worry,” Barragan shared during her interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on “The State of the Union.” “We are likely to escalate the situation further. People are protesting because they are upset about the circumstances.”
On Saturday, Trump dispatched 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles amidst protests directed against immigration and customs enforcement (ICE). White House Press Director Karoline Leavitt indicated that the deployment was prompted by “violent mobs” that had recently targeted “federal law enforcement agencies performing essential deportation activities.”
“These operations are crucial to stopping and reversing the influx of illegal criminals into the United States. This violence has caused California’s Democratic leaders to neglect their duty to protect their citizens. That’s why President Trump has sent 2,000 National Guard troops and signed the necessary presidential memorandum.”
The president has criticized California Governors Gavin Newsom (D) and Karen Bass (D).
“This is clearly just an escalation from the president’s side as he comes to California,” Barragan remarked on Sunday. “We don’t request assistance. We do not require it.”
In response, Newsom labeled the federal action as “inflammatory” and argued that sending troops “undermines public trust.”
