WASHINGTON (AP) – A federal appeals court ruled on Tuesday that the government will continue to gather evidence regarding President Donald Trump. Import tax sweep Meanwhile, his prominent trade policy challenges remain under appeal.
The U.S. Court of Appeals’ decision extended a previous ruling after another federal court invalidated tariffs on May 28, stating that Trump had overstepped his authority. The appeals court highlighted that Trump’s tariff challenges involve “exceptionally important issues.”
The lawsuit encompasses the 10% tariffs the president enacted on nearly all countries in April, as well as the tariffs he implemented on significant economies and paused in nations where the U.S. has a trade deficit. Trump is also focusing on imports from China, Canada, and Mexico, applying pressure on them to do more to curb the illegal flow of immigrants and synthetic opioids across the U.S. border.
In justifying the tariffs, Trump invoked emergency powers under a 1977 law. However, a three-judge panel in the U.S. Court of International Trade concluded that he had exceeded his authority.
These tariffs have disrupted global trade, hindered businesses, and shocked financial markets.
