Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (AP) – President Donald Trump stated on Friday that he is working to arrange a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as possible.
Trump is aiming for face-to-face discussions after Putin opted out of the discussions between Russia and Ukraine set for Friday in Türkiye.
“I believe it’s time for us to do that,” Trump told reporters during his four-day visit to the Middle East.
Trump emphasized that he wasn’t surprised by Putin’s absence, stating that he “didn’t want to go” since Putin wasn’t there.
He confirmed his intention to meet with Putin.
“I’m actually headed out here,” Trump remarked. “I want to see my beautiful grandson.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed to be part of the talks as leaders called for a resolution. However, President Putin has initiated a call to meet with Zelensky.
Trump is urging both parties to swiftly reach a peace agreement. While Zelenskyy has consented to the US plan for a 30-day ceasefire, Russia has not endorsed it and continues its attacks within Ukraine.
Nevertheless, Russia and Ukraine are set to hold their first direct peace negotiations on Friday in Istanbul. Officials and observers are hopeful that this will not lead to immediate progress after over 3 years of war.
“He didn’t attend, and I understand that,” Trump commented. “We need to do this. On average, 5,000 young lives are lost each week, and we must address it.”
Trump conveyed to reporters on Thursday that a meeting between him and Putin is vital to overcome the stalemate.
“Until he and I come together, I don’t believe progress will be made, whether you like it or not,” Trump stated. “But so many people are dying, we need a solution.
