Supreme Court to Consider Appeals from Faith-Based Pregnancy Centers in New Jersey

Washington (AP) – supreme court the individual announced plans to contest the state’s investigation regarding whether New Jersey’s faith-based pregnancy center misleads individuals by including abortion referrals.

The judge has agreed to review an appeal from First Choice Women’s Resource Centers, which seeks to prevent the enforcement of a 2023 subpoena. Democrat New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin is pursuing information related to Crisis Pregnancy Center donors, marketing materials, and healthcare professionals. This has not yet been executed.

The Supreme Court has consented to hear the case nearly three years post overturning abortion as a national right. Since that decision, many Republican-led states have initiated new bans or restrictions, while a majority of Democrats are striving to secure abortion access.

Attorneys representing First Choice Women’s Resource Centers defined the organization as a “faith-based, life-sustaining pregnancy center.” Crisis Pregnancy Centers generally aim to support women experiencing unwanted pregnancies, steering them away from opting for termination.

The group contested a federal court subpoena, but the judge ruled that the case lacked sufficient weight to proceed. The Court of Appeal concurred.

First Choice Women’s Resource Centers has filed a lawsuit against the Supreme Court, asserting that the demand for donor information infringes upon First Amendment rights.

In the meantime, Platkin has sought to enforce the subpoena in state courts, yet the judge has thus far denied the state’s efforts to compel the group to submit documents, instead directing both parties to negotiate.

Encouraging judges to relinquish the case, Platkin remarked that the organization has persistently evaded inquiries regarding its operations and possible misrepresentations of reproductive healthcare.

“The initial reaction is to seek special exemptions from standard procedural regulations as we work to avoid compliance with a completely lawful state subpoena,” he stated on Monday. “No industry is entitled to such exceptional treatment – end of story.”

The organization is accused of improperly utilizing the investigative powers of the Attorney General across the political spectrum, contending that the defendant should have the right to challenge requests in federal court.

Pregnancy Centers are supported by alliances advocating for freedom.

“The New Jersey Attorney General is targeting First Choice, a ministry that provides the community with parenting classes, free ultrasounds, baby clothing, and more. We eagerly await filing our case with the Supreme Court.”

The court is scheduled to hear the discussion in the upcoming fall session.
