Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) expressed his strong support for Israel’s actions against Iran on Thursday, stating he would “continue to eliminate Iran’s leadership.”
“Our commitment to Israel must be unwavering, and I fully back this operation,” Fetterman stated in a post on social platform X late Thursday. “We must eliminate Iran’s leaders and nuclear personnel. To ensure surprise against Iran, we need to provide all necessary resources: military support, intelligence, weapons, and more.”
Fetterman is a staunch advocate for Israel and has not hesitated to critique members of his own party regarding this issue. The topic gained prominence following the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the Gaza War.
In a significant escalation, Israel launched a substantial attack on Iran early Friday, targeting the country’s nuclear and missile facilities due to concerns over Iran’s advancing nuclear program. Israel is apprehensive about Iran acquiring the ability to deploy nuclear-armed ballistic missiles and has vowed to prevent this outcome. Iran has now issued warnings of severe retaliation.
The Israeli strike resulted in the deaths of three prominent Iranian military leaders, including General Mohammad Bagheli, who commanded the entire army, General Hossein Salami, leader of the paramilitary revolutionary guards, and General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who oversaw the ballistic missile program.
Former President Trump stated he was aware of impending Israeli attacks, even though they proceeded without direct US support. Discussions about Iran’s nuclear program were scheduled for the upcoming weekend.
On Friday, Trump urged Iran to return to the negotiating table following the attack.
“We’ve already witnessed significant loss of life and destruction, but there’s still time to avert this carnage. The next planned attack is expected to be even more devastating as we approach the brink,” Trump noted in a post on Truth Social.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio mentioned that the US was informed that “self-defense” necessitated these strikes, although the US did not participate in the operation. Rubio cautioned Iran against targeting US interests or personnel in retaliation.
