Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) stated on Sunday that after President Trump, the president “seems to have the right to do something.”
“He doesn’t respect the Constitution. He disregards the rule of law,” Sanders expressed during his appearance on CNN’s Dana Bash’s “State of the Union.”
“As I understand it, neither the California Governor nor the mayor of Los Angeles requested the National Guard; yet he believes he can act unilaterally,” he continued.
On Saturday, Trump dispatched 2,000 National Guardsmen to the Los Angeles region amidst protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). White House press director Karoline Leavitt stated that this action was prompted by “violent mobs” that had recently attacked “federal law enforcement agencies conducting basic deportation operations.”
“These operations are crucial to halt and reverse the influx of illegal criminals into the United States. The violence has caused the unprotected Democratic leaders in California to completely neglect their duty to safeguard their citizens. That’s why President Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guardsmen and issued a memorandum from the president, which has been authorized.”
The president has criticized California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D) for the disturbances stemming from the ICE operations.
Newsom described the federal response as “inflammatory” and asserted that the deployment of troops “erodes public trust.”
Rep. Nanette Barragan (D-Calif) also remarked on Sunday that the National Guard’s presence in the Los Angeles area would likely “escalate the situation.”
Oka has reached out to the White House for comments.
