Senate Republicans are advocating for the elimination of penalties for automakers that fail to meet national efficiency standards.
Car manufacturers need to comply with fuel efficiency benchmarks established by the Ministry of Transport.
The GOP’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” presented on Thursday by members of the Senate Science, Commerce and Transport Committee, aims to reduce the penalties for non-compliance to zero.
The debate over the strictness of automobile fleet standards has been a point of contention between Democratic and Republican administrations in recent years. However, this new legislation takes it a step further by completely eliminating penalties, charging nothing if a company fails to meet the standards.
Recently, several automakers have had to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in penalties related to vehicle efficiency regulations.
In a statement from Ted Cruz (R-Texas), chairman of the Law, Science, Commercial and Transportation Committee, the bill purportedly “helps unlock America’s full economic potential.”
Automakers may still be subject to tailpipe emission regulations proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency. Texts from the Environment and Public Works Commission oversee individual standards and are attempting to dismantle Biden-era requirements without eliminating the entire regulatory framework.
