Bishop Marian Budd of Washington criticized the efforts against LGBTQ+ rights on Wednesday, claiming they are “trying to turn back the clock” and encouraged people to bring hope and joy to the national capital during World Pride amidst a politically turbulent period for LGBTQ+ Americans.
“We are no longer in the 1960s and ’70s,” Budd, an Episcopal Church bishop, stated to the World Pride audience.
Six months ago, Budd concluded an interfaith prayer service following Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration, urging the president to “show mercy to those in a frightening country right now,” which includes LGBTQ+ individuals and immigrants.
Budd’s remarks have faced harsh criticism from Trump and his supporters, yet they resonate with many across the nation who find themselves in the spotlight.
Before addressing the World Pride event on Wednesday, Bud extended an invitation to activists and organizers through the Associated Press to take action, expressing that they should “focus on love, joy, and community as a counter to fear.”
“This helps us avoid becoming immobilized by the fear of forgetting who we are and our history in the fight for equal rights,” she emphasized.
