On Thursday, an investigation highlighted nearly 30 “potential non-citizens” who participated in Texas’ 2024 election.
As noted in a press release from the Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson’s office, 33 individuals with questionable citizenship voted in the November 2024 general election in the Lone Star State. Their names have been forwarded to the state attorney general’s office for further inquiry.
This revelation follows Texas gaining access to the Department of Homeland Security’s SAVE database, per the release. According to federal agencies, SAVE is a web service used by various governmental bodies to verify the immigration status and citizenship of individuals seeking benefits or licenses.
The availability of this system to states came after President Trump issued a Presidential Order in March, directing the DHS to “share database information upon request” to assist in maintaining a current and accurate list of all legally registered voters within the state.
“Accessing this database marked a significant turning point. We not only identified individuals who should not have voted in the last election but also verified dozens of additional naturalizations,” said Nelson in a statement.

As per Texas law, all “qualified voters” are required to be US citizens to vote in elections. A proposed amendment for a November 2025 ballot aims to affirm that “non-US citizens” cannot participate in Texas elections.
The announcement on Thursday follows the failure of Texas Republicans to pass a bill before the conclusion of the state’s 2025 legislative session. This bill aimed to mandate proof of citizenship when residents register to vote, led by GOP Speaker Dustin Burrows, who was appointed with support from Texas Democrats.
Nelson’s announcement highlights ongoing efforts by leading Texas Republicans to safeguard state elections against fraud. Recently, Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office charged six residents amid allegations concerning voter harvesting activities.
