SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement to acquire Bryce Huff from the Philadelphia Eagles after a contract restructuring took place.
Sources familiar with the matter indicated on Friday that both teams finalized the trade following Huff’s contract revision. Due to salary cap implications for the Eagles, the transaction cannot be finalized until after June 1st. These sources requested anonymity.
ESPN was the first to report that the team confirmed their acquisition of Huff for a draft pick on the third day. Huff was set to earn $17 million this season, fully guaranteed, but according to ESPN, the 49ers are responsible for $7.95 million, with the Eagles covering $9.05 million of that amount.
The addition of Huff provides San Francisco with another vital option at Edge Rusher alongside star Nick Bosa, reuniting him with New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh in what could be a productive season for Huff in 2023.
As noted by Pro Football Focus, Huff notched 10 sacks during that season and registered 67 pressures on just 334 pass-rushing snaps. He parlayed that impressive performance into a three-year, $51.1 million contract with the Eagles.
Despite only managing two and a half sacks and 23 pressures in his single season with Philadelphia, Huff missed five games due to a wrist injury but returned to full health for the Super Bowl.
Originally an undrafted free agent from Memphis in 2020, Huff recorded 7.5 sacks in his first three seasons before achieving a breakout year under Saleh in 2023.
The 49ers were in need of another pass rusher after releasing Leonard Floyd earlier this offseason. They selected Michael Williams 11th overall in April, yet there were no other defensive ends in the NFL with at least five sacks. The only other seasoned edge rusher on the roster is Gross-Matos, who had four sacks last season in his first year with San Francisco.
