RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A large number of dogs have been rescued from deplorable living conditions in North Carolina.
Animal control officers, acting on complaints from Raleigh residents, discovered 101 dogs confined in cages at a home on Wednesday. A significant portion of the rescued animals were small breeds, including both puppies and older dogs.
The homeowner has agreed to relinquish the dogs, alongside 21 chickens, according to reports. The dogs have been relocated to eight different shelters and have received medical evaluations from the SPCA branch. Many of the dogs were found to have matted fur, as well as various skin and dental issues.
It remains uncertain if the homeowners will incur any fines. There has been no immediate response to inquiries made to the Raleigh Police Department on Friday.
On Friday, the organization noted that several dogs are experiencing “their first day of life and probably getting a taste of fresh air.”
“This is a significant milestone in these dogs’ lives, and we are extremely thankful to be a part of their recovery.”
